As of 1 January 2023, sports betting has been made widely available throughout Ohio, after having been legalized in the state the year before. As more and more states have legalized online gambling to one degree or another, the Ohio legislature opted to join the fray in a move that will almost certainly bring an influx of cash to the state and will allow sports fans to finally legally bet on their favorite sports and favorite teams. It’s about time, too, as Ohio is home to one of the most sports-crazed cities in the entire country – with the rest of the state not far behind. 

The process of legalizing sports betting in Ohio actually started on December 8, 2021, when the General Assembly passed House Bill 29, which legalized the activity through both licensed operators of online sportsbooks and brick-and-mortar bookies. Ultimately, though, the bill took effect on March 23, 2022, but it took until the start of this year to iron out the specifics and allow for a proper, controlled state-wide launch.

Online platforms literally couldn’t wait for this new reality to hit as they launched their apps and websites at the strike of midnight on New Year’s Eve for anyone over 21 in Ohio to wager on whichever sport they wished. 

So, if you’re in Ohio, now is as good a time as any to place a bet on your team or player of choice. It’s only been a few months since sports gambling was made available in the state and already there are a wealth of both online betting apps and real-world bookies to choose from.
